It's always about the people!

Even for a project that has been ‘cooking’ for a lifetime (it is called a passion), the trigger always boils down to the people you meet and the discussions you have. The initiative around Rewilding Löwen River is no different.

I have been fortunate to have on my path: John Mendelsohn, Pierre Joubert and the Oppermans.

John is as much a gentleman as he is THE Namibian Atlas expert. Touring the country with him spans from stopping to the roadside and inspect bird nests to hiking in the Löwen River canyon, turning back the clock a few hundred million years, when Namibia had enormous glaciers (hence, Fish River Canyon). Or spotting a rare Cape Eagle Owl in the property cliff.

Pierre is the youngster in the crew. With energy and enthusiasm that transpires from his solid frame (he does not believe in veggies or water ;-), the idea of a unique conservation place in Löwen River comes from him. His experience as a game ranger in renowned reserves bound with his side job as a real estate agent make him the perfect companion.

And then, The Oppermans. Starting with Chris and Ester who lived on the property for 37 years and raised 4 kids. Chris has been looking after the Löwen River property as its custodian. Nothing in excess, with lots of common sense and a longer-term perspective. Chris and Ester’s lives are the Löwen River. They know this 13’000ha place like most people know their backyards, with the joys, sacrifices and efforts that it takes to make a living from it. It takes a special type of person to still admire and love such a place after so many moons.

Fortunately for us, Matheus and his wife have stayed to look after the property. They worked with Chris for 14 years. Their knowledge, hard work and dedication to the place make them the true guardians of Löwen River.

The purpose of the farm has now changed from sheep, goat and cattle to conservation. They embrace that new mission just as diligently. Seconded by Johannes who does not have any farm experience, yet he is eager to help. Providing an extra pair of hands to the endeavour.

With that band, my role is to stir ideas and confusion akin a well-known Swedish Chef. I am immensely proud to be part of this adventure, and look forward to rallying more people to join us.
